How much should you really invest for a good mountain bike?
When you consider buying a moutain bike, the question of budget comes very quickly. Between models costing a few hundred francs and those that are well over several thousand, it is normal to wonder how much you really need to invest to have a 'good' mountain bike. The answer depends above all on your practice and your expectations.
Entry-level mountain bikes are generally designed for discovering the discipline. They often feature a simple aluminum frame, basic suspensions and heavier components. This does not mean that they are bad, but rather that they are designed for occasional use on untechnical terrain. For someone who rarely rides or who is just starting out, this type of bike can largely suffice.
By moving up in the range, we quickly notice improvements. Mid-range mountain bikes offer more efficient suspensions, capable of absorbing shocks while remaining stable. The transmissions are becoming more precise, with smoother shifts, and the brakes offer better grip, which improves safety on downhill. The weight of the bike also decreases, which is especially noticeable in climbs and on long outings.
The high-end is distinguished by the use of premium materials, such as carbon, which allows for further gains in lightness and rigidity. The components are more efficient, but also more expensive and sometimes more demanding in maintenance. These bikes are designed for intensive and committed practice.
In reality, a good mountain bike is not necessarily the most expensive. The essential thing is to choose a bike adapted to your frequency of rides, your terrain and your level, in order to obtain the best ratio between pleasure, performance and budget.
